Let’s get nostalgic, skattie!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 13, 2011 --
Uys first performed Adapt or Dye in 1980 at The Market Theatre. In this memorable performance, Uys will reflect back over the last 30 years, and says that this performance is not so much an adaption “but a balance between what was then and what is now. The irony will be to see how much from 30 years ago, in a state of emergency, can be recognised as still being part of our democracy, in spite of everything.”

This significant performance of Adapt or Dye will trace a journey that began some 30 years ago, and will go on to frame our current reality in relation to the past. Tannie Evita, together with old and new friends, will reminisce about where we were, where we are now, and what’s really changed in the interim. Expect nothing less than her usual incisive humour.

Uys’ performance cuts straight to the heart of this year’s Apartheid Archive Conference theme, which ‘explores various deployments of nostalgia in different global contexts, including post-authoritarian and post-conflict societies, as well as contexts characterised by social, political and economic instability, fragmentation and disintegration’. Over the past three decades, Uys’ relentless satirical critique of political and social issues remains as relevant now as it always has been. In this special performance he will continue to engage with the lived realities of the South African population through his unique blend of cutting ironic humour and flamboyant performance.

Drama for Life (DFL), which was established in 2008, uses drama and theatre as activism, education and therapy for human rights and social justice. Having single-handedly used performance to engage the apartheid and post-apartheid regimes in dialogue about social justice, Pieter-Dirk Uys is a true pioneer of the transformative power of the arts. Warren Nebe, director of DFL, says that “it is a privilege to be associated with one of South Africa’s icons; it is a mark of Drama for Life’s commitment to the Human Rights and Social Justice programme, and it is a chance to reflect, through humour on who we have become as South Africans.”

This historical performance is open to the public, and will run for one night only. So don’t miss out, skatties, on this opportunity to watch our favourite Tannie reminisce about the then, the now and the in-betweens that have shaped us.
